To wrap up the day we'll have a post on social care: - washing - dressing - looking after yourself - doing basic functionality It's a hot topic at the moment. The government is considering what to do about it because apparently it's the latest crisis. My opinion: the state has got to act as the ultimate backstop but it only is the insurance policy of the last resort. You've got to look after your family, those around you. You've got to help out with people and also you've got to live your life sensibly so that you save a bit of money. You don't fitter it away when you're young or middle-aged, going out to expensive restaurants, that kind of thing. You live responsibly so that you can look after yourself or pay to look after yourself when you get old. Yes if you don't want to look after your family, if you don't want to do those mundane things, well you've got to try and pay somebody to do it. At the end of the day a professional person to do it, a carer to do it. That's the reality of life. You can't expect the state to be wiping your bottom and mopping your brow all the time I'm afraid. That's not being harsh, that's just the reality of life. The state acts as the insurance policy, the ultimate backstop, for things where people are through no fault of your own. Someone's got into a difficult situation for some reason, such as an accident or something like that. People have got to behave responsibly and sensibly in life. For example if you are a landlord, you don't charge egregious rents or put your tenant to great stress so they can't save up to look after themselves when they get old, things like that. It's a case of not being led by looking after yourself completely all the time but you've got to think about others. Think about the other person. Post a comment: |
